"Modern education is premised strongly on materialistic values. It is vital that when educating our children’s brains that we do not neglect to educate their hearts, a key element of which has to be the nurturing of our compassionate nature." - Dalai Lama

Week 3

This week we celebrated the Labor Day holiday, which meant a day off from classes.  What did you do for the Labor Day weekend?  How did your college experience (brief though it has been) impact what you did for the weekend?

  1. This Labor Day weekend I went home to visit family and friends. I heard a lot of people would be home for the weekend and I wanted to catch up and see how everyone’s college experience is going so far. A group of us got together and watched movies and talked all night. I had fun listening to their stories and telling my own as well. On Sunday I had relatives over to my house to celebrate Labor Day. We played volleyball and card games, watched TV, and ate tons of food. I also had to run for soccer throughout the weekend since we didn’t have practice. Then I came home Monday and caught up on all of my homework that I neglected over the weekend.
My college experience probably impacted my entire weekend. If I hadn’t gone to college then I wouldn’t have missed my friends or felt the need to catch up with them. Nearly every year my family invites relatives over to celebrate Labor Day. However, I normally don’t interact with them as much as I did this weekend, because I see them all of the time. This time I knew I wouldn’t see them for a longer period of time, so I acted differently. Finally, college soccer forced me to run and my college education required me to do homework.

  2. For Labor Day weekend, I did many things. I watched the Hunger Games Friday night, went to the Mizzou game Saturday, and went home Sunday. My mom made a big dinner for the family Sunday night and watched "My Cousin Vinny". I got to see one of my best friends, Allie, because she was in town for the weekend from West Point. On Monday, I played golf with my dad and sister. I came back Monday night and my best friend and his family visited my dorm.
My college experience has impacted my weekend because now I actually have a reason to ask my parents for some extra money. Also, I was able to see my friend Allie. I haven't seen her in a longtime and probably won't see her again for awhile so I acted differently around her. Also, my mom had eye surgery so I felt guilty I wasn't able to be their for her through it. And, my sister is getting married and I am the Maid of Honor (we joke and call me the Maid of Dishonor). She has been planning and organizing for the wedding, basically doing my job.

  3. Friday night I went to see The Possession with my friend from Mizzou, which was fun, though, I wish I could say the same for Saturday. I was rudely wrenched from my idyllic slumber by some loud yelling very early Saturday morning. Saturday afternoon my mom called me and told me they were on their way to take my brother to the E.R. because he was suffering horrible stomach pains. The culprit was eventually discovered to be kidney stones. I spent the remainder of the day in a fog of worry over my brother.
Sunday was very fun. My mom came to visit and she brought my puppies with her. We met up with my friend Sam from Mizzou. My mom bought me a Keurig, K-cups, and coffee mugs. It was nice to be able to spend the day with my mom and my puppies.
I spent nearly all day Monday with Sam. I cleaned his room and went with him to get groceries. We ended up watching Coming to America. After that, he brought me back to Columbia College in time for work.
My college experience has definitely had a big impact. I can't see my mom anytime I want, or my puppies. I also can't get a consistent eight hours of sleep without being awakened.

  4. This Labor Day weekend, I traveled back home to St. Louis. On the way home, my car broke down in the middle of nowhere, and I was stuck on I-70 for a while until my car finally started up again. Being in college made that seem more realistic, because now my car is my responsibility, and I had to deal with the troubles myself since I was away from home.
After my car, slow as it was going, finally made it to the county, I visited with my neighbors, family, and friends. My friends were excited to see me, and the realization hit me that I was actually in college. It was great to spend time watching movies and driving around (in their cars, obviously) and catching up.
Sunday was a great day, because I got to visit my church and see my friends there. They have played such a huge role in my life, and not getting to see them these past few weeks has really impacted me. It was awesome to talk to them and tell them all about my classes and my experience so far. They were working on planning upcoming events, which normally I would be a part of, and it was hard knowing that I wouldn't be in town to share those experiences.

  5. To start off my weekend, I got out of class friday super early so I finished all of my homework before I came home so I didnt have to worry about it. I left at one o'clock for home. On friday night my mom and I picked up my twin brother from his friends house, then we all went out to dinner as a family. On saturday morning my mom and I went out to lunch and just hung out, and that night my friend from home had a party for all of our friends that came from college which was alot of fun! On Sunday we had family dinner at my aunts house. My college experience has made a big impact on my life so far becuase I appreciate my family for what they have done for me. I get really excited to go home now and see all my friends and family since I dont see them every day like I did the past 18 years of my life.

  6. Shockingly enough, coach gave us the weekend off. This allowed me to have somewhat of a life outside of school and soccer. I decided to go home and spend the weekend with my mom, boyfriend, and his family. First I went camping for a couple of days with Jacob and his family. Then we came back on Sunday and went to dinner. I made sure I spend a good chunk of my time with my mom because she is probably who I miss most. I had a lot of fun but wish I could have stayed longer.

  7. This Labor Day Weekend, I went home to Dixon and just hung out with my family, which is extremely important to me. Being able to just spend time with the people I love after not seeing them for almost a month was a blessing in itself. I had an eye appointment (lucky me) where the optometrist screwed up my prescription, so I get to go back this Saturday. I am so enthralled to do that again (yes, that was sarcasm). Also, me and my little sister, Reagan, had our annual movie night (including the Hunger Games, She's the Man, and Cop Out), and being able to just sit and talk or enjoy the movie together was something I had greatly missed. College has given me a much greater appreciation of time with them all.
My college experience impacted my weekend mainly because it seemed like I was doing homework the whole time! Past labor days were just spent laying around and relaxing, but that wasn't the case. College has made me appreciate family time and down time a lot more. It has just made me more thankful for what I get to do and have the opportunity to spend time with family, which many don't get the chance to do.
I wish the weekend had lasted much longer, but I'm glad for the few short days off we had.

  8. This Labor Day weekend, I stayed in Columbia until Saturday because of soccer. But on Sunday I got to go to the lake of the ozarks with my family!! I was so happy coach gave us the weekend off. But then on my day off on Monday I spent the day in urgent care because I was sick. College definitely impacted my weekend, because I would have been at the lake on Friday until Monday, in some way it is good and some bad! I was happy to finally get to see my family, but I also wanted to be with my teammates up in Columbia. This weekend, I got the best of both worlds!

  9. This Labor Day Weekend I went back home worked and hung out with my friends. College effected my need for money that's for sure. I also had some stories to tell my friends when I got back. Otherwise, I worked so I could have some extra spending money around here. College also effected how my friends saw me. They we're all very upset that I had not talked to a single one of them since I had gotten here. They then declared I was "too cool" for them. I did not disagree with them of course, I mean I am pretty cool.
At work everyone was happy that I was back since I did most of the hard cleaning, which I do not mind because we had finished the other things that had to be done that day anyway. Everyone wanted to know what crazy adventures I had been on in college. I had only been here for two weeks so I could not give them much. Then after a long weekend of working and hanging out with my friends I headed back to the dorms. If college has effected me at all it is that I sure do miss everyone back home.

  10. Ohh... this is gonna be a good one! To start off my weekend,on friday my roommates car broke down and we were stuck on the side of the highway in the pouring for 5 hours and no one stopped, but we eventually got home. Now, Saturday everything was better. I spent time with my family and my mom made my favorite dinner and the worked at the wonderful BK lounge forever, then hungout with some friends. Sunday, was just a chill day, like any other sunday.
College expirience helped me realize that I have to be responsible and be more mature when I do things.

  11. This Labor day weekend was basically like all the others. I mean except the I'm in college part. Bored out of my mind so two seconds in my dorm room seemed normal to me. But I missed being around people I had just meet because they went home. I had a massive amount of homework... way more than if I was still in high school. So basically the same except nothing at ALL LIKE BEFORE!
Labor Day weekend was completely backwards for me. I went home one day. In that one day I worked my butt off. I have to clean a house i don't live in, buy gas I don't use, and I willing bought my grandma some extra food but carrying it inside sucks. So labor day weekend was greatly impacted by CC.

  12. This labor day weekend I went to the Mizzou game on saturday, then I drove home to Louisiana. There I hung out with all my friends that also come home. Also I went out on the Mississippi River and went wake boarding, skiing and tubing. College has had an impact on my weekend due to the fact it has brought my friends and i closer together and also has made me realize how much money I spend, it goes fast!

  15. labor day weekend i spent in my hometown. I spent time with my family and old friends. my college life didn't really effect what I did. Its what i would of done even if i wasn't in college. As of right now i do the same thing but as college gets more deeper into school work i feel like it will change my weekend activities.

  16. I stayed around the house and watched movies including paranormal topics and entities. Then, I read books on similar subjects and drew a bit along with going hiking around the creeks and woods near our property. As far as acting different because of college, I ended up remembering why I wanted to leave in the first place. I don't dislike my relatives, but they were getting on my nerves a bit of the time. So not much has changed really.
