"Modern education is premised strongly on materialistic values. It is vital that when educating our children’s brains that we do not neglect to educate their hearts, a key element of which has to be the nurturing of our compassionate nature." - Dalai Lama

Week 5

What has surprised you or been the most challenging about establishing a schedule or routine in college?  Why?  How have you managed this obstacle?

  1. The most challenging thing as of right now is balancing social life with school work with getting enough rest. It is hard to keep a good balance on all three. You want to divide all three things to have a good college life but also saying up with your school work so you can stay in school. Also need your rest so you can be fully focused. You need to be responsible.

  2. The challenge of college is always time. Sometimes you have way too much. Other times you feel like to make it on time you need to run. As a student athlete I have a special warm place in my heart for those with outstanding GPAs and functional social lives. The unpredictability of time makes scheduling extremely hard the demand of your time is so high.

I spend time wisely is how you manage unpredictable situations. I spend an average of Five hours a day doing something basketball related. ~3.5 hours of class each day. Studying for four hours is typical.~1.5 eating my different meals. Plus my college sleeping is 5 to 6 hours. That's already ~20 hours of the 24 we get and I haven't been to a social event yet. I try hardest to multitask and to leave as much space for unexpected events as possible.

  3. The challenge that has surprised me is that my schedule is always changing. It is always changing because of soccer and I am still getting used to having different classes every day. I either have a lot of extra time to do what feels like nothing or I have everything piling up! I am dealing with this by doing stuff in advance. Getting my homework done at the beginning of the week and studying almost every day so I wont feel overwhelmed.

  4. I was surprised by how hard it is in college to set a specific routine and stick to it every day. In high school I was forced to do the same thing every day whether I wanted to or not. Here at Columbia College I have so much more free time to do whatever I want. I tried at first to just complete assignments as they were given to me. Now as assignments keep piling up I feel like I need to come up with a routine to keep me on track. I plan to focus on one subject at a time rather than think about all of the assignments I should be doing in all of my different classes. Hopefully this will keep me on the right track so that I do not become overwhelmed.

It has also been hard to find time to be social with friends. Every time I get a chance to do something it seems like those around me are busy. Then when they want to do something I am busy. Because we all have different schedules it seems like there is never a happy medium between all of the people I want to socialize with. In order to manage this obstacle we will need to communicate better and plan ahead more often.

  5. My biggest challenge here at columbia college is making a schedule. I tend to procastinate as much as possible and not do homework till i really have to. This is not a good thing and something I am reay going to have to work on. I am really enjoying all my free time at college and having unlimited freedoms, however I really neeed to figure out how to budget my wisely and be smart about tie management. I have managed to overcome the strong urge to go hang out go to bars etc. and instead stay home and do my homework. I am starting to figure out how much time I have to spend on each of my classes and I am finding the right amount of time to do what is necessary for me to be secussful here at columbia college.

  6. My biggest challenge here at CC is motivation. I have found it hard to bring myself to do the homework. I'm so used to getting assigned homework and just not caring about it, that's what I did from kindergarten to my senior year of high school. It's so easy for me to look at my homework, then look n see that I can go out with my buddies whenever I want to (for the most part) and then just throw the homework aside and go out. I wish that I had the ability to just sit down and get through my homework without taking multiple, multiple breaks. I need to learn some responisibility, but I feel like I won't be able to learn it until I've dug myself into a hole. Which I really hope is not the case, but I know myself enough to know that I learn best from my own mistakes. But I would really like to find some motivation to get my work done in anyway possible.

  7. Compulsiveness has been the most challenging thing for me. While other people may struggle with procrastination and lack of motivation, I am the complete opposite. If I have homework, I won't be able to do anything enjoyable until it is finished. It nettles me to no end if I have work to do and I am not getting it done. I don't really have a fixed schedule because I've never needed to organize my free time around accomplishing tasks. My routine consists of class, homework, and work. Sometimes I wish I wasn't so compulsive in regards to homework, but at least I get it done before it gets out of hand.

  8. The internet is really distracting. I always find myself trying to search for music to listen to on youtube while i'm dong assignments for classes. I do manage to get my work done however, though because of this distraction I tend to procrastinate. To overcome this obstacle, I always watch the clock closely to know how long I can spend fooling around and also keep track of how long it takes to complete different types of assignments so I can estimate about how long it may take to complete others.

  9. My biggest obstacle is not having a set 7 consecutive hours to go to class like in high school. It is very easy to spend your time doing things un related to school or homework and then be behind. Also, balancing my job with MUPD and being an Ambassador and 16 credit hours is a definite switch I am not used to yet. I feel like it will get easier and just practicing good habbits now will hopefully help in the long run!

  10. For me, establishing a schedual isnt hard at all. I just go with the flow. For example, if there has been homework assignments given to me I get them done the day they were assigned, usually right after my last class for the day. Not to say that my agenda can't be rough sometimes, which it is. Tonight I'm pulling an allnighter for my philosophy exam. The lack of sleep is gonna be tough, but I feel it is just somthing I have to do in order for me to learn the information.
The most surprising thing that I discovered about time management in college is that it is nothing like trying to manage your time in highschool. There is so much information to know for your exams, so much detail that you have to perfect on your assignments, you have to make sure that you set time aside for your studies. In highschool it didnt take much for me to pass a test. All i really had to do was listen in class and I almost always pass. College, however, this is not so. My last two exams that I took I passed with a C. In some peoples eyes (as for my own), a C is not the most admireable grade a person can ahieve, but I'm damn proud of mine, because I know I worked as hard as I could and put forth one-hundred and ten percent. Even though I didnt get the A's that I strive for, I did the best I could, I passed, and I am totally content with that.

  11. The most challenging thing for me this year is definitely juggling school, soccer, and personal time. Coming to college I don't think that I was as prepared as I thought I would be for the load of work that I am now handling. I'm trying my hardest to get everything done and my time managed with the least amount of stress as possible. I think that I am getting better at managing my time but I definitely have room for improvement. Hopefully his class will help some with that and not be another stress factor in my life. But we'll see. Fingers crossed!!!

  12. The most challenging part of my routine in college is having spare time. In High School, I participated in multiple sports and clubs, took college credit classes and had a job. My schedule was busier than the schedule I have now. I use to never have time to study for tests so I used every chance I could to study. Now, I often get distracted doing other things when I should be studying or getting caught up on work. I do not use my time wisely and usually end up studying late at night.
I still have yet to manage this problem but I could take baby steps to accomplish it. If I do not need a computer for my studies then I should stay away from it because that is my biggest distraction. Another distraction I have is that I usually do homework or study around people. I get caught up in the conversations and zoning out away from my work. Also, with my spare time I have, I should focus on getting all of my work done before I do anything.

  13. The most challenging about managing my time in college is trying to find me time. I'm always doing homework. The way I did this is to do my homework the day that I get it instead of procrastinating until the last minute. Another difficult thing is keeping up on my homework. For example, This week was a little mind bolggling with all the exams, and studying that had to be done. But I can sat I managed my time with that. I actually had to lock my door, and not answer my phone or door to get it all done.

  14. The most challenging thing my time in college is finding myself a routine throughout the day. In highschool I had a set routine that was the same everyday of the week. I would wake up, go to all my classes, go to practice till 5 and then head straight to work. Its a little differnt in college becuase most of my classes are all spread out, so I have more time during the day to get my homework done. Another thing that is challenging is that I get very distracted when I have a computer right in front of me, I always tend to be on facebook, twitter, and listening to music when I should be doing academic things.
