"Modern education is premised strongly on materialistic values. It is vital that when educating our children’s brains that we do not neglect to educate their hearts, a key element of which has to be the nurturing of our compassionate nature." - Dalai Lama

Week 9

Have you decided on a major yet?  If so, what is it and why have you selected that major?  If you’re undecided on a major, what ones are you thinking about?

  1. I have decided on my major. I will be majoring in sports management. I have chosen this because I wanted to do something with fitness and I wanted the business aspect too. With this degree I could run my own gym and be a personal trainer. I could even advertise for professional sports teams! I am hoping to get an internship with a sports team in either Kansas City or St.Louis and hopefully that will lead to me getting a job.

  2. I have not perminately decided on a major, but as of now I want my major to be History. I love anything historic, anything that has happened in the past. I think that the past decade has been causing America and the world to go downhill. Everybody is too dependent on technology. Everybody has their smartphone, that they cannot possibly live without. It's a little square block in your hand that can bring you any news, pretty much anything you need. But this is causing people to live alternate lives, they are different through their texts than they would be talking face to face. That's why I am so facinated with the Native Americans and old Aztecs and the Mayans. They lived without any of these things for hundreds and hundreds of years, using only what they found in nature. Even back in the 60's and 70's people couldn't learn everything about somebody and what they were thinking 24/7 by looking at Facebook or Twitter. The only way they could contact people was either their landline telephone, which you could only use in your house in one room. Or write a letter that takes a couple days to get a response. I wish we still lived like that. People are so lazy and rely on something that will leave them lost in the world if they didn't have it by their side all day, everyday. People would stay out of others' business, and be much better, nicer people if we didn't have all these bogus technologies that let us in to all the little, pointless, petty details of everybody's life. So that's why I want to study History, I want to learn what life was like without knowing all this stupid stuff about everybody that all I need to do to find out is log on to a website.

  3. I am debating on whether or not to take part in a dual major of Art and English, or just major in art and minor in English. I am certain that I am going to continue with a career involving art so i do suppose that Art would have to be it; though I have not officially declared it as a major specifically.

My problem is, if I do decide to have a minor instead of a dual major, I don't know whether or not I want to continue with English. It is something that I am good at, but not something that I picture myself doing in the future as a career or anything absolutely long term in life. Its somewhat tedious, and I would much rather do research on mythology and folklore. Sadly however, there is no minor in such a field that I am aware of

  5. I'm currently majoring in psychology. Honestly, I don't think thats what I want to do. SO what I was thinking is to major in Human services and minor in psychology. All I want to do is work with kids and help others. That is all I've wanted to do my whole life. I was dead set on psychology, after taking classes, I realized that wasn't what my heart was into. So if I can change someones life thats all that matters.

  6. I am declared as an English major with an emphasis in Creative Writing. I am also planning on minoring in Film Studies, but could not start my pursuit of that this semester due to the pre-requisites.
I have selected a Creative Writing major because I have been writing stories since I could pick up a pencil, and would love to do it as a career. I aspire to write novels as well as try my hand at screen-writing, which is where Film Studies comes into play.
If I change my major, I would just drop the emphasis on Creative Writing and stick with English. One of the occupations I desire to try at some point in my life would be as a publisher or an editor, which don't need a writing degree necessarily.
I may be extremely critical of my work nowadays, but I do not doubt that writing will a major focus in my future careers. I know this is what I am meant to be doing.

  8. I chose Criminal Justice as my major here at Columbia College. Since I was a little kid, I always wanted to be a detective. Growing up, if someone were to ask me what I wanted to be when I got older, I said I wanted to join the FBI.
Before coming to college, I questioned and hesitated about whether or not that was something I actually wanted to do and could see myself doing because that is the only thing I ever considered. Now that I have been here, I know that is what I want to do. I really enjoy my intro to criminal justice class. I think it is interesting how our justice system works. I want to be a part of it someday and maybe help change it for the better. I have gone on a couple ride-along's with the North Country Police Department in St. Louis, and it was a very influential experience. I can see myself making a career out of this major. It requires hard work but also leadership in my field, which is something that I have experience with. Hopefully, after graduating from college with this major I can work my way up in law enforcement and get a great job.

  9. I have decided to major in forensic science, with a focus on biology. I want to get into a career that is rewarding. I have always flirted with the idea of becoming a forensic scientist, ever since I was a little kid and had just learned what forensic science is. I fell in love with forensics when I was younger and I would watch Forensic Files obsessively. I've always had an interest in the dark side of the human psyche. I'm fascinated by how people become "evil" on a neurological level. For awhile throughout high school I had wanted to become a forensic psychiatrist. It wasn't until last year, my senior year, that I read a book that rekindled my love of forensic anthropology. I find bones and anatomy really interesting. Also I really want to pursue forensic anthropology because, to me, there won't be anything as awesome as identifying a skeleton, or pieces of a skeleton, so that it can be buried and the family can finally have some closure.

  10. I have not yet fully decided on a major; however, I am leaning towards majoring in Human Services. I’d like to be able to help people in crisis situations and work with groups or individuals to help them solve their problems. This major could also open doors to assist underprivileged children or people with mental disorders.

I have previously gone on mission trips helping underprivileged children with school work. Talking to them made me realize how fortunate I am and how I’d like to make their lives better. I have also volunteered at The Special Learning Center back in my hometown, and watching one little boy in particular made a significant, lasting impression in my mind. It made me feel good to help him eat his breakfast or tie his shoes. The occasional laughter that he would bring to the room brightened my day. I really like making the lives of others less complicated, which is why I feel a major in human services might be a good fit for me.

  11. I have already selected my major which is Finance, and actually I am thinking about a double major, adding acconting. I choosed this because since kid I´ve always liked math and business. Also my family runs a business so I have always been involved in a business atmoshphere. Also I want to have money in the future, and I think this is my best option to acomplish that. I would like to add that I also have in mind studying Economics, but the problem is that in CC there´s not a major for that.

  12. I decided to major in general studies with a minor of education. I didnt want to major in basic studies like biology, english, or psychology becuase I am not interested in those subjects. I wanted to do general studies becuase I get to teach all subjects if i wanted to! Even though I want to teach elementary students I can always go back to highschool and teach any subject. I have so much patience and I love being around children. Eventually I want to get into teaching speacial ed. I have been to some classes and shadowed special ed classes and I love it. They have a speacial place in my heart, and I think it would be a good fit for me.

  13. I have decided to major in Psychology, with an emphasis on Secondary Education. I am part of the DayStar program here at Columbia College, and will graduate with a Master's in Special Education. I decided around fall of my junior year in high school that teaching is what I wanted to do with my life. I first wanted to teach at inner city high schools, and be part of the Teach for America program, until I realized the harsh reality of it. I then decided I still wanted to help kids who need a little more than your average student, and decided to observe for a year in a Special Education classroom my senior year. From there, I fell in love with this field, and knew I wanted to do this for the rest of my days.
I chose psychology in particular because with the program I had to make the decision between psychology, sociology, and human services. I thought that psychology would benefit me the most in the long run, although it is one of the hardest in the beginning. I think it benefits because psychology is the study of individual people and the reasons they perform the way they do in their daily tasks. For a special education teacher, no two students are going to be the same, so this is going to help a lot in understanding the needs of each of my students.

  14. I decided to do a B.S. of Criminal Justice becasue I wanted to do something in Law Enforcement. I plan on going to the academy after college and then eventually working my way up to the Federal level like FBI some day! I want to be able to give back to society and I think it would be fun. Being a police officer is something I have always wanted to do and I am currently working with the MUPD as a Campus Safety Officer and I love it!

  15. My major is Biology Premedical. I am really big into science and I have always wanted to become some sort of social worker. What is more social than helping people stay alive and/or fixing little things that people may have wrong with them. I had come to Columbia College for Forensic Science, but really I just wanted to become a medical examiner (which is a type of doctor). I have no real drive that has made me want to become a doctor. I mean I have a mentally handicapped sister, but she is not my rhyme or reason to becoming a doctor. I also do not have any relatives who are doctors so there is no one person I look up to. I just really like people and I really like science and becoming a doctor is probably my best chance of getting to have both subjects in the same career.

  16. I typed up an entire two paragraphs, but I will have to retype everything, because the mouse that the computer I was using to type sucks, and it has a back button, causing me to retype the problem again. Anyway, I am doing this post, because the week 10 post is not showing on this site, so I am doing week 9.

I am a major in Computer Science, because I love to solve complex problems, and I love taking on major challenges, it makes me feel really good when I solve a problem I once thought was really complex and impossible.

I know that I am in the right major, because I enjoy talking to my professor and upper-classmates to find insight on how to solve problems more efficiently as well as finding more problems to solve for even more practice and satisfaction.

  17. I have decided a major. I want to be a Human services major and criminology minor. Human service is a hard field to define. According to the National Organization of Human Services “ is broadly defined, uniquely approaching the objective of meeting human needs through an interdisciplinary knowledge base, focusing on prevention as well as remediation of problems, and maintaining a commitment to improving the overall quality of life of service populations. The Human Services profession is one which promotes improved service delivery systems by addressing not only the quality of direct services, but also by seeking to improve accessibility, accountability, and coordination among professionals and agencies in service delivery (2012). “

I selected this major because I love Helping. I have to routes in mind already that I can do with my degree but most likely will go to graduate school. I have two military parents so giving back to those families seems like something I would love to do as well. So I really like the major I picked.

  18. My current major is Business Administration with a focus in Public Relations. I may also focus in Marketing, because the degrees overlap, and the second degree only needs nine more credit hours. I have always been interested in the business field, but I am not a huge fan of math, so I chose a less math-intensive route.
Public Relations focuses on keeping a company or organization connected with the public. After meeting other professors and students in this department, I feel like it it something that I will stay interested in. Personally, I think keeping interest in your chosen major is the most important thing in school. If you don't remain interested, you won't be motivated enough to reach your full potential in your classes. I plan on sticking to my chosen major, and I am excited to learn even more about it.
